This resonated with me so strongly. Asking for help is difficult for me, but helping others - hell yes! That was one of the upsides to social media like Twitter and Instagram: I trained myself to ask for help and advice on things, and it went really well. I do like the idea of mentors very much.
Yes - asking for help on socials (and advice/tips/recs) is definitely a good way to learn that people are super happy to help out if they can. It's a lovely feeling to post advice or knowledge when asked, but also so blimmin' brill to see a whole list of suggestions when you were feeling stuck. Taking it into the real world seems just as good! Let us know if you start the search for one for yourself. :) x
I never been in a formal mentoring arrangement, but there are several people I consider my mentors, both as geek and photographer. I've mentored a few myself, too.
In some cases, yes. Others have mentored me without either of us putting that name on it. I am sure others would say similarly of my mentoring.
So informal mentoring happens all the time. Formal mentoring relationships offer additional rewards and challenges. How accountable do I really want to be?
I have mentored and been a mentee and both are powerful and magical. And I was certainly blown away when I was asked. (And I have deffo guessed who your wonderful mentor is and she rocks!!)
I love the desc of 'powerful and magical' because it truly is that - the joy of helping and seeing others thrive (I enjoy that feeling so much, especially as a child-free woman I think) and also of someone giving their time and expertise to you - it's a real confidence boost. (And, yes I bet you have guessed, and she defo rocks!) xx
Wonderful!! Definitely worth the taking the chance and asking the questions!
I pay for a mentor which I really enjoy but I never considered being one but you’ve made me think I’d quite enjoy it so will ponder on this for a while! Similar to you asking for help with things I feel I should be able to manage is a tough one but I think the more you do it the easier it becomes.
It's so cool that you have a mentor already Jess - how did you decide who to go for, and is it for work? I bet you'd be a fab mentor too. Will you let me know if you do it? 🤩 x
Yes of course, actually I started looking for a counselor as the one I had became a bit stagnant we’d been together a long time and I needed a change when I stumbled across a well-being organization that consisted of counselors, mental health practitioners and various other fields. They do an assessment apt and allocate you based on what you need. This relationship gives me space to offload, re ground and also then she pushes me a little too!
That sounds fanstastic! I am so glad its working out for you (and also impressed with your courage of knowing when you needed to change your last arrangement too - that's a hard conversation sometimes!) xx

That's ace Steve. Do they know they're your mentors and that you see them that way?

Yes yes yes!! To all of this. Especially to
